Inequality

Why throwing food away is a social justice issue.

I haven’t had a hot meal in three days. I never thought something like leftovers could mean this much.

Food is more than fuel

It started with a tray of extra lasagna.

Nothing fancy. Just the kind of thing you make when the fridge is full of “almost too old” veg and you need to stretch what you’ve got. Tanya, one of our longtime volunteers, brought it to a community event she wasn’t even planning to stay for. “I figured someone would eat it,” she said. “Didn’t expect it to be gone in ten minutes.”
Turns out, someone turned into twenty people.

A few folks asked what was in it. One woman wanted the recipe. Another person said, “I haven’t had a hot meal in three days.”

Leftovers get a bad rap as if they’re less-than. But what Tanya saw that night was the opposite. A pan of repurposed ingredients became a reason to gather. It fed stomachs, sure. But it also sparked laughter, conversations, and an offer from someone nearby:

“Next time, I’ll bring rice.”

That’s how it starts.

Waste less, care more

We throw away over a third of all food produced. At the same time, millions of people go hungry. Leftovers — the stuff we push aside, forget in the fridge, or label as boring — are actually one of the easiest, most powerful ways to do better. Better for the planet. Better for each other.

What you can do:

  • Don’t underestimate the little things. That extra portion? Freeze it. Share it. Label it for lunch tomorrow.
  • Cook “bottom of the fridge” meals. Get creative with what’s left. Some of the best dishes are born this way.
  • Host a “Clear the Fridge” dinner. Invite friends over. Everyone brings something odd. Make a meal out of it.

Leftovers matter, because people do

This isn’t just about food. It’s about seeing value where others don’t. It’s about showing up with what you have, and trusting it’s enough. We’re proud to be part of a growing movement that doesn’t let good meals go to waste and believes every bite can build something better.
